[SID 2023] LG Display Presents Innovations in OLED and Next-Generation Display Technologies

LG Display made yet another impressive mark at SID 2023, where global display companies and experts gathers to exhibit new display technologies and present various research papers. Researchers at LG Display unveiled their latest research findings including 15 research papers encompassing OLED and next-generation display technologies.

With over 500 total research papers presented at this year’s symposium, two of LG Display’s research presentations on the ‘ultra-large OLED’ and the industry’s first ‘Stretchable display’, were selected among the top 20 papers, and were given the ‘Distinguished Paper’ honor for their notable achievements in its respective sectors. Let’s take an exclusive glimpse into these game-changing research breakthroughs that are set to reshape the future landscape of the display industry!

LG Display’s WOLED Leading Premium TV Market

LG Display’s research team led by Dr. Hong-jae Shin kicked off the first day of the SID 2023 symposium with the presentation ‘A Novel Ultra-Large Size OLED Display for Premium TVs’, showcasing the company’s key technologies that enable the successful commercialization of ultra-large OLED TV panels that exceed 80 inches.

Dr. Shin and his team utilized LG Display’s WOLED technology to address challenges in maintaining consistent picture quality that ultra-large OLEDs reportedly have, further advancing panel and driving technologies, improving the performance of organic light-emitting components, and minimizing bezels. As a result, LG Display was able to produce its 88-inch 8K OLED TV panels back in 2018 and the world’s largest 97-inch OLED TV panels last year, becoming the only company to mass produce ultra-large OLED panels of over 80 inches.

Recognized for their leadership in OLED innovation and receiving the ‘Distinguished Paper’ honor, Dr. Shin expressed a deep sense of pride for his team’s contributions, stating that “After taking part in the commercialization of the world’s first 55-inch Full HD OLED TV back in 2013, our team is pleased to be part in producing ultra-large OLED panels that extend to more than 80 inches just a decade later and being recognized for our efforts by the top display industry minds at SID.”

Third-Generation OLED TV Panel ‘META Technology’ Elevates WOLED’s Supremacy

LG Display’s unique WOLED has proven to be the optimal choice in the ultra-large TV market, thanks to the integration of the company’s proprietary ‘META Technology’, which was first showcased at CES 2023 earlier this year.

META Technology comprises a ‘Micro Lens Array’ that maximizes light emission from the OLED panel and ‘META Booster,’ a brightness-enhancing algorithm. With META Technology, LG Display redefines TV picture quality once again by achieving 60 percent brighter images with the highest brightness of 2,100-nit among any TV display on the market today, while also achieving 30 percent wider viewing angles and 22 percent enhanced energy efficiency compared to that of the same brightness.

Based on META Technology, LG Display’s 77-inch 4K OLED TV panel has a total of 42.4 billion micro lenses, 5,117 micro lenses per pixel, which work to emit even the lost light due to internal reflections to produce the clearest pictures. Additionally, META Booster analyzes and adjusts the brightness information of each scene in real time, further enhancing the screen brightness and accurate color expression.

Stretchable Display: A ‘Rubber band-like Panel’ that Contorts Like No Other

Considered to be the ultimate next-generation display technology that can be freely stretched, folded, and twisted without distortion or damage, the research team hurdled past various technical challenges to introduce the industry’s first 12-inch high-resolution Stretchable display with 20% stretchability.

Presenting the significance of the novel technologies applied to this new groundbreaking tech, the research team leader Hae-yoon Jung, emphasized that “The 12-inch high-resolution Stretchable display offers vast advancements over existing stretchable technology in terms of resolution, flexibility, and the ability to retain its shape after repetitive changes to its form, marking a significant step towards commercialization.” Jung also credited the research team’s relentless efforts in receiving the ‘Distinguished Paper’ recognition, adding that “It is truly gratifying to witness the birth of a display technology that was previously unimaginable and to receive recognition for our technical capabilities on an international level.”

Innovative Form Factor : Stretchable Display

In order to bring the Stretchable display to reality, LG Display implemented a Micro-LED light source with a pixel pitch of less than 40μm to secure high levels of durability that can withstand significant external impacts, while achieving a high resolution of 100ppi and full-color RGB.

In addition, based on a highly resilient, film-type substrate made of special silicon to ensure rubber band-like flexibility, the Stretchable display can be stretched from 12 inches to 14 inches and back. With its versatile and free-form nature, thin and lightweight form factor, and the ability to be seamlessly integrated with almost every object around, the Stretchable display is expected to hold endless possibilities in various industries such as wearables, fashion, and mobility.

LG Display strives to provide display innovation by delving deep into ultra-large, ultra-high resolution, and unique form factor displays. With its pioneering research and cutting-edge display technologies, LG Display is at the forefront of setting display industry trends and shaping future lifestyles that benefit everyone!
