LG Display and The Walt Disney Studios’ StudioLAB Team Up To Develop Unmatched Viewing Experiences Through OLED Technology

SEOUL, Korea (Oct. 21, 2020) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, today announced a three-year innovation partnership with The Walt Disney Studios’ StudioLAB, combining cutting-edge OLED display technology with the Studios’ world-class content to create exceptional viewing experiences.

Among StudioLAB’s Innovation Partners, LG Display is the first focused on the development of professional and consumer displays. Through this partnership, LG Display will provide StudioLAB access to the latest advancements in OLED technology. Together, they will work on a variety of projects to equip Walt Disney Studios filmmakers with new production tools and provide consumers with fun, interactive and immersive experiences tied to the Studios’ film releases.

With OLED, each pixel individually controls itself by turning on and off, resulting in the color accuracy that reflects the filmmakers’ true intent, with deepest, truest black and unparalleled picture quality. OLED technology encompasses a range of products, including a cutting-edge transparent OLED that allows viewers to see through the display while seeing graphics in an augmented reality-style experience. This innovation partnership expands the Studios relationship with OLED as a trusted professional display for filmmakers.

“This new innovation partnership reiterates our commitment to providing the best display capabilities to Disney’s amazing filmmakers and technologists and our dedication to offering an ideal viewing experience of their beloved characters and worlds,” said Oh Chang-ho, Executive Vice President and Head of TV Business Unit at LG Display. He added, “Given that OLED provides an incredible experience not just for viewing content but for creative production and exhibition as well, we’re hopeful this innovation partnership will help showcase the exceptional qualities of OLED to content creators and consumers around the world, delivering a powerful experience while pushing OLED technology to the next level.”

“This collaboration opens a whole new dimension of future possibilities and enables us to accelerate the innovation we need to quickly develop and test new types of experiences, now more than ever,” said Matthew Deuel, Director of Innovation Partnerships for the StudioLAB. “It’s exciting to be exploring the future with LG Display’s impressive engineers and amazing technology. We are already working on some very cool projects that we plan to deploy in the near future and I can’t wait to see the joy that these new experiences will bring.”

The Walt Disney Studios is a home for beloved film and animation studios including Disney and Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Blue Sky Studios, and 20th Century Studios. Marvel Studios already uses OLED technology during its creative process, having deployed LG’s 88-inch 8K OLEDs at locations for use in episodic visual effects review and color finishing. As more of the Studios’ creative entities follow suit, the collaboration will embrace LG Display’s cutting-edge OLED display technology to develop new capabilities for creatives and novel types of experience for exhibition, with an immediate focus on projects that can be optimized for the present times.

“The OLED suite of products provides us with the picture quality that we need to ensure the best viewing experience possible for our filmmakers and our fans,” said Eddie Drake, Head of Technology at Marvel Studios. “Whether we are evaluating contrast and color accuracy or testing extreme viewing angles, OLED displays have demonstrated why their exceptional picture quality is in a league of its own, and we look forward to seeing how OLED technology advances for years to come.”

LG Display’s OLED products have been recognized by leading global product inspection agencies both for their outstanding picture quality from all angles and eye comfort. OLED TVs maintain top places on Consumer Reports each year and are also certified by UL and TÜV Rheinland for less blue light and flicker-free screens, which are features suitable for younger audiences. As the only large-size OLED display manufacturer in the world, LG Display offers Cinematic Sound OLED displays with the sound system embedded to generate sound directly from the screen, as well as a wide range of next-generation OLED products such as transparent, rollable, and bendable OLED displays.
