LG Display has been committed to pursuing environmentally friendly processes such as reducing plastic usage and increasing the use of recycled materials. As a testament to these efforts, the company’s TV and Transparent OLED panels became the first of their kind to be awarded several environmental certifications from global organizations. Let’s have a deep look into this recent milestone that will further cement LG Display’s pioneering role in the display industry.
The first-ever ‘Low Plastic’ verification for display panels
UL a global independent safety science company, strictly grants the ‘Low Plastic’ verification only to products with plastic usage accounting for less than 5% of the total weight. In a significant milestone, LG Display’s OLED TV panels and gaming OLED panels have become the first display panels to receive this verification.
Internal measurements reveal that LG Display’s 65-inch OLED TV panel contains approximately 4% plastic content, achieving a reduction of over 90% in plastic usage compared to similarly sized LCD TV panels.
LG Display’s OLED panels feature a structure where each pixel emits light independently, eliminating the need for backlights required in LCD panels. This design also minimizes the use of film sheets, significantly reducing plastic consumption. Additionally, by substituting key components with easily recyclable materials, LG Display has increased the recyclability of parts to as high as 92.7% at disposal.
The third-generation OLED TV panels, integrating the innovative ‘META Technology 2.0,’ have achieved a remarkable 22% improvement in energy efficiency compared to previous models. This enhancement was made possible by maximizing light emission from organic light-emitting components.
Already certified by global environmental certification companies such as Carbon Trust and SGS for ‘Product Carbon Footprint’ and ‘Eco-Product Certification Mark’ certifications, LG Display’s OLED TV panels have further solidified their position as a leader in the premium TV market by adding the ‘Low Plastic’ verification.
LG Display’s Transparent OLEDs shine bright with eco-friendly certification
LG Display’s Transparent OLED panels earned the Eco-Product Certification Mark from SGS, particularly for their excellence in three major categories of product eco-friendliness: resource efficiency, energy efficiency, and minimal use of harmful substances. In detail, 23% of all components that make up the Transparent OLED panel are comprised of recycled materials, coupled with the fact that the panel adheres to the EU’s REACH regulations on chemical substance management.
Acquiring SGS’s Eco-Product Certification Mark for Transparent OLED panels can be considered as one of the achievements resulting from LG Display’s adoption of the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) since 2021. LCA is an evaluation system introduced to develop products that consider environmental impacts throughout the entire process from planning, development, production, consumption, to disposal. LG Display has utilized this technique to achieve reductions in material and component usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and power consumption during manufacturing, as well as to develop low-power consumption products and reduce waste.
