Once confined only to sci-fi films and imagination, technologies such as self-driving vehicles, dashboard controlled via touchscreens, and backseats equipped with entertainment systems are becoming or have already become reality. Innovations in mobility are a hot topic in today’s world as seen through the latest CES 2024, where 693 mobility-related companies took over the consumer tech expo.

At the heart of the mobility trend at CES 2024 were SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles), which represent a transformative era that transcends the traditional roles of automobiles to offer AI-driven, personalized features and entertainment experiences that capture passengers’ attention. Through CES 2024, LG Display presented tailored display solutions that are optimized for various stages of SDVs development which are Shift to SDV, Evolution of SDV and Beyond SDV.

So, what future mobility trends should we eagerly anticipate? Let’s delve into them through LG Display’s cutting-edge automotive display solutions!

Introduction of SDVs leading to innovations in interior design

In the Shift to SDV phase, the size and number of automotive displays expand to allow passengers to conveniently operate and control various in-vehicle functions. In line with this mobility trend, LG Display’s automotive displays offer innovative user experiences and convenience to both drivers and passengers.

For the maximum screen surface, cameras are discreetly mounted beneath the dashboard display panel to eliminate the protruding design of traditional dashboards, creating a differentiated and seamless design with no visible notches or holes.

The display spanning across the driver’s and passenger’s seats enhances both safety and entertainment. Utilizing the company’s SPM (Switchable Privacy Mode) technology, also known as ‘viewing angle control’, the passenger-side screen remains invisible to the driver’s view during driving to minimize any distractions towards the driver, while passengers can comfortably enjoy entertainment content.

Foldable displays into the back of the driver’s and passenger’s seats

LG Display suggests an integration of foldable displays into the back of the driver’s and passenger’s seats, enabling rear-seat passengers to enjoy personalized time freely. With screens with clear picture quality available in the backseat, passengers can watch content or work on documents, effectively transforming the space into a ’mobile office’.

Creating premium spaces through the evolution of SDVs

A Pillar-to-Pillar display in a pop-up form creates a spacious interior by widening the space between the windshield and the steering wheel. Moreover, by employing an ultra-high brightness display across the windshield, the cockpit of the vehicle resembles that of a cockpit of a spacecraft in a sci-fi movie. Displays positioned on the right side of the steering wheel can feature seamlessly integrate with various interior materials by mimicking the texture of carbon or wood to complement a luxurious interior design while preventing distractions for the driver with various displays in their line of sight using the Shy Tech feature. When needed, the display can be activated for use.

The rear space is elevated to a new level of luxury, with a sliding ceiling display that remains concealed when not in use to conserve space, only sliding down when needed to offer a large and clear screen for content consumption. In addition, transparent displays mounted on armrests enhance aesthetics while elevating the interior ambiance in the rear space.

The new paradigm of mobility through ultra-large display solutions

In the final Beyond SDV stage, LG Display showcases a paradigm shift in future mobility experiences through innovative vehicle displays such as the world’s largest Pillar to Pillar display, which received the Innovation Award at CES 2024, all of which were featured in the company’s futuristic concept car.

The world’s largest P2P display, which received the Innovation Award at CES 2024

LG Display conceptualized a driverless concept car for the era of full autonomous driving. In this concept, the distinction between the driver’s and passenger’s seats fades away, facilitating a face-to-face configuration between the front and rear seats. The cockpit boasts the world’s largest Pillar-to-Pillar display that presents driving information, transforming the vehicle from a means of transportation to a ‘living space’.

Receiving the ‘CES® 2024 Innovation Award’ from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) for “offering new mobility experiences for passengers” thanks to its ultra-large size, high-definition picture quality, reliability, durability, and outstanding design, this display provides a comprehensive view of various vehicle information such as driving and climate control, high-definition content including movies and games, and exceptional touch sensitivity with its proprietary ‘In-Cell Touch’ technology.

Outdoor display

Future mobility also extends beyond the vehicle interior to the exterior. Leveraging V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication that allows the vehicle to communicate and share information with various elements on the road for autonomous driving, LG Display proposes exterior display solutions for V2X communication as well as for advertising.

Enhancing customer value through the integration of eco-friendly technology

What are your impressions of LG Display’s future automotive display solutions? On top of solidifying its top position in the automotive display market, LG Display is also committed to its ongoing research for better solutions.

For example, LG Display’s automotive OLED recently received the ‘Product Carbon Footprint’ Certification from TÜV Rheinland, reflecting the importance placed on creating eco-friendly products in the global automotive industry. In addition, LG Display began mass production of its second-generation Tandem OLED, an exclusive two-stack OLED technology, in 2023, which reduces power consumption by 40% on top of higher brightness and enhanced durability. This year, the company has begun development for the third-generation Tandem OLED, which will further bolster brightness levels and energy efficiency.

With the company’s proprietary technology complemented by environmentally conscious practices, be sure to be on the lookout for LG Display’s next industry-leading innovation!
