Under the theme of ‘A Better Future,’ LG Display’s SID 2024 booth, comprised of ‘Innovation towards reality,’ ‘Unrivaled OLED technology’, and ‘Shaping the future of mobility’ zones, features a diverse range of high-tech technologies that will help shape the future of display innovations.
In the Innovation towards reality zone, LG Display unveiled a new technology that OLEDoS technologies and can raise the transparency of Transparent OLEDs from 45% to 60% in a lab-themed setting to allow visitors to experience the new applications that these next-generation OLEDs provide firsthand.
1.3″ 4K OLEDoS
LG Display’s latest innovations include a new technology, OLEDoS for VR, which is being shown to the public for the first time and features dramatically increased screen brightness and resolution compared with the existing standard.
Made up of OLED deposited on a silicon wafer substrate, OLEDoS is attracting attention as a way to deliver AR and VR in high definition even on the micro scale. In particular, VR displays require higher screen brightness and resolution than general displays to increase the viewer’s sense of immersion when external light is blocked.
Combining a newly developed high-performance OLED element with the company’s Micro Lens Array (MLA), this OLEDoS model achieves an ultra-high brightness of 10,000 nits and an ultra-high resolution of around 4,000 ppi, which is in the 4K class. In addition, its color expression accuracy is realized by meeting more than 97% of the DCI-P3 standard color area of the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI). Visitors to the booth were able to experience the more lifelike virtual reality in person through a VR headset mockup equipped with the new OLEDoS.
1.3″ 4K OLEDoS LFD (Smart Watch)
LG Display also showcased the world’s first Smart Watch based on the OLEDoS panel featuring LFD (Light Field Display) technology. This luxurious analog watch provides intuitive ways to access various apps typically used in smartwatches, such as messaging, SNS, weather, health, and more. It is also equipped with glasses-free 3D technology called light field technology, which has holographic-like effects to provide users with a more convenient experience.
13.7″ Transparent OLED
Initially mass-produced in 2019 and still to this day manufactured only by LG Display, Transparent OLED has made leaps and bounds from its initial specs from 2019. At SID 2024, the company showcased a prototype that boasts an impressive max transparency of 60%. LG Display was able to achieve this feat by optimizing their pixel structure and operating parts to offer a clearer view through the panel.
