[Beyond TV] The Apex of Picture Quality Attained Through ‘Cognitive’ Algorithms in TV panels

In our previous installment of Beyond TV on MLA+, we covered the hardware aspects of LG Display’s third-generation OLED, META Technology 2.0. In this episode, we discussed the software aspects, namely in the forms of ‘META Multi Booster’ and ‘Detail Enhancer’ algorithms with Park Il-kwon, member of the Large Display Operating Circuit Design Team, and Lee Jae-in, member of the Large Display Product Planning Team.

While the display industry of the past was solely focused on pumping out products with improved hardware performance, almost all display manufacturers today are actively utilizing software enhancements such as algorithms, big data, and AI to further enhance picture quality. As the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, LG Display is at the forefront of the software boom with its next-generation displays.

In this episode of Beyond TV, we will explore the different algorithms that LG Display offers on its display panels to further bolster its leadership in the industry.

The brightness enhancing algorithm ‘META Multi Booster’ that analyze down to the pixel level

META Multi Booster is a brightness enhancing algorithm of META Technology 2.0 that operates based on the hardware capabilities provided by MLA+. This algorithm precisely analyzes brightness information and adjusts for each scene for the most optimal image brightness.

Utilizing the data of each pixel’s characteristics, META Multi Booster’s image quality algorithm embedded in the panel’s driving IC analyzes the viewer’s video in real-time and concentrates more energy on areas that need to be displayed brighter (or less energy on areas that need to be displayed darker) to accurately reproduce images. All in all, META Technology 2.0 boasts a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits through the combination of MLA+ and META Multi Booster.

Featuring 42% brighter images than conventional OLED displays, this latest variation of OLED achieves a much brighter display that closely replicates the brightness and colors of the real world. By making brighter areas appear brighter and darker areas appear darker, META Multi Booster delivers vivid and dynamic images that are most striking when depicting the shimmering auroras in the night sky. Thanks to META Multi Booster, viewers can now enjoy immersive and realistic visuals as if they were watching them in real life.

‘Detail Enhancer’ further enhances picture quality by articulating details in brightness contrasts

While enjoying movies or dramas at home, it is very common to misrecognize characters or backgrounds in dark scenes. This is because displays tend to struggle with accurately representing darker images with low gradation as compared to bright images with high gradation.

To address this technical limitation, LG Display developed the full-range brightness detail enhancing algorithm ‘Detail Enhancer’. When Detail Enhancer is applied to darker scenes, this algorithm meticulously analyzes the image and articulates subtle changes in color or brightness between adjacent pixels, resulting in additional color and shading.

Picture with low gradation results in choppy and abrupt color changes (left), while Detail Enhancer’s wide range of gradation ensures a smoother image (right)

The wide range of gradients that Detail Enhancer provides ensures more shades of color, resulting in smoother transitions without abrupt color changes.

Also, born from the combination of a new data processing technique with the existing OLED ‘Pixel Dimming’ technology, which meticulously controls the light of 33 million pixels individually in 8K resolution images, Detail Enhancer enables consistent and accurate color representation regardless of how bright the image is. With LG Display’s OLED, viewers can now experience distinct colors true to the creator’s original intent.

The harmony of hardware and algorithms for the ultimate picture quality

Whenever people hear about a display’s improvement in image quality, many might immediately look towards hardware upgrades; however, different image quality aspects such as color reproduction and detailed expression are often difficult to address solely through hardware enhancements.

In order to create a truly ultra-realistic display, we recognized the need for a ‘cognitive’ function that can act similar to a human eye in discerning and adjusting each image. Our continuous effort and innovation in this research ultimately led to the creation and implementation of META Multi Booster and Detail Enhancer algorithms into the chips inside the OLED panel.

New customer value created through ‘Natural Reality’

When META Technology 2.0 was first unveiled to the world earlier this year, we received praise from our clients for our technological advancements in peak brightness and image quality. By implementing innovative algorithms into our already world-class hardware upgrades, we have pushed the potential of OLED beyond boundaries that were previously thought to be unsurpassable.

Representing yet another step towards our ultimate goal of ‘Natural Reality,’ META Technology 2.0 is the closest viewing experience akin to what the human eye perceives. Our pursuit to find the most realistic viewing experience continues unabated, as we are constantly uncovering new technological innovations to bring the next-generation OLED to the market.
