At CES 2024, LG Display’s dedicated booth for automotive displays presents three concept cars equipped with automotive display solutions optimized for each stage of Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), including the ’57-inch Pillar-to-Pillar LCD’, the world’s largest automotive display and the winner of the ‘ ‘CES® 2024 Innovation Award’, and the largest slidable panel, the ’32-inch Slidable OLED’. Divided into three zones named ‘Shift to SDV’, ‘Evolution of SDV’, and ‘Beyond SDV’, LG Display is offering a glimpse into the future of automotive display technology.
In the ‘Shift to SDV’ zone, a comprehensive integration of SDVs into the mobility industry highlights the need for larger automotive displays as infotainment features become more diverse. These displays not only provide driving information but also offer content viewing to significantly enhance convenience for both drivers and passengers.
For the Shift to SDV phase, the ‘Ultra-large P-OLED Pillar-to-Pillar’ featuring LG Display’s pioneering Tandem OLED is the most optimal solution. Tandem OLED is a two-stack OLED technology that adds an extra organic emitting layer for brighter screens, optimal stability, and longer lifespans. By incorporating this technology, the ‘Ultra-large P-OLED P2P’ enables passengers to access various features like basic driving controls and content viewing. In the back seat of the concept car, the ’17-inch Foldable OLED’ is integrated, which allows rear passengers to enjoy movies on a large screen or fold the display to use as a 12.3-inch tablet.
In the next zone, ‘Evolution of SDV’ showcases how vehicles can accommodate both travel and relaxation as SDVs gradually advance. In this phase, On-Demand features that allow users to configure their display environment for driving, work, or leisure become important.
These features are included in the ‘Pop-up-type 48-inch LTPS LCD’, which can be popped up for use and enables passengers to access driving and music information simultaneously on its large display. The ’18-inch Slidable OLED’ is a solution that is hidden in the ceiling of the vehicle for a space-saving and seamless interior. When extended down for use, its sharp picture quality offers a unique content viewing experience.
In the final ‘Beyond SDV’ zone, the interior of future, fully autonomous SDVs is shown. Doing away with the steering wheel with the advent of fully autonomous driving, this concept car features displays with various sizes and functionalities installed throughout the entire vehicle.
Here, ultra-large display solutions capture our attention, including the world’s largest automotive display panel, the ‘57-inch P2P LCD’. Its natural curvature of 3,500R spans across the entire dashboard from the driver’s seat to the passenger’s seat and offers driving information, climate controls, and other vehicle information simultaneously, while also allowing passengers to attend video calls, watch a movie, or play games on its massive screen. This technology was also awarded the ‘CES® 2024 Innovation Award’ for its ultra-large size, high-definition picture quality, reliability, durability, and exceptional design that offers a new mobility experience.
Another display that stands out is the largest slidable panel today, the ’32-inch Slidable OLED’. This panel can be retracted downwards from the ceiling to fill the vehicle interior with a large, QHD resolution screen for movies, video calls, and gaming, which can be easily selected through a control pad.
