LG Display Launches World’s First 84-inch ULTRA HD LCD for Interactive Whiteboards

LG Display, a leading manufacturer of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display, announced today that it has begun mass production of the world’s first 84-inch ULTRA HD LCD display for interactive whiteboards. The advancement highlights the emerging trend integrating technology into the classroom to improve education for students around the world.

A Superior Interactive Whiteboard Solution

At 1.9m by 1.1m, LG Display’s new 84-inch ULTRA HD panel for interactive whiteboards measures as the largest LCD product of its kind, ideal for installation in classrooms as it is similar in size to conventional whiteboards currently used in schools. In addition, the display features a maximum brightness of 350 nit, 3.5 brighter than existing projector-type interactive whiteboards; and ULTRA HD resolution of 3840 x 2160 (about 8.3 million pixels), 8 times the image quality of current HD projectors.

With superior brightness and clarity, the new whiteboard display solves weaknesses inherent with current projector-type whiteboards. Users no longer have to turn off the lights or close multiple window blinds during the daytime to play educational content. Also, the new display eliminates occurrences of images being blocked by silhouettes and disrupting the attention of students, a major complaint with existing projector-type interactive whiteboards.

Finally, LG Display’s new display is able to integrate touch functionality allowing users to annotate directly on the screen, without the need for a separate touch-enabled whiteboard screen as required by projector-type. The display can also be equipped, upon request, with LG Display’s industry-acclaimed Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology featuring wide viewing angles and inexpensive glasses – key for a class full of students.

Advancing a Fast Growing Market

According to the research firm Futuresource, a rapid growth rate of close to 50 percent is expected for the interactive whiteboard industry over the next three years, specifically 830,000 products in 2011 to 1,210,000 in 2014. As more digital educational content is being released and 88 percent of current interactive whiteboards are projector-type, LG Display’s improved whiteboard display launches at a critical time for the market.

“With LG Display’s new 84-inch ULTRA HD LCD for interactive whiteboards, we are proud to introduce a product that will contribute to enhancing the learning experience for students worldwide,” said Mr. Joon Jun, Vice President and Head of LG Display’s Public Display Task, “Education is a relatively new sector for the fast growing public display market and LG Display continues to serve as a pioneer for the field.”

Availability

LG Display has supply contracts in place with leading interactive whiteboard suppliers in various countries. The new whiteboard will launch in Korea and China at the end of 2012, followed by North America and Europe in the first half of next year.
