Tech with a Heart for the Earth! LG Display’s High-end Laptop Panels Certified for Reducing its Carbon Footprint

These days, consumers are looking beyond just product features –they’re considering the environmental impact of production. A prime example of this trend is the rise of ‘greensumers’ (green consumers). According to a report by the Institute for International Trade (IIT) of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), greensumers prefer products that are eco-friendly in terms of production, packaging, and materials, and tend to favor companies that pursue sustainable practices.

LG Display has been making continuous efforts to respond proactively to this increasing demand for eco-friendly products, and to provide reliable product information to its customers. As part of these efforts, LG Display’s high-end 14-inch laptop panels have become the first in the industry to be certified Product Carbon Reduction (PCR) and to be granted bio-based Environmental Claim Validation (ECV).

Let’s dive into how LG Display is stepping up for the environment while delivering value to its consumers!

First in the Industry to Earn ‘Product Carbon Reduction’ and ‘Environmental Claim Validation’

‘Product Carbon Reduction’ by TÜV Rheinland and ‘Environmental Claim Validation’ by UL Solutions

Product Carbon Reduction is certified by TÜV Rheinland, a leading global independent testing, inspection, and certification body. It evaluates the reduction in carbon footprint and the total greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire product life cycle—from raw materials to production, distribution, use, and even recycling. Meanwhile, UL Solutions, a global safety science organization, grants bio-based Environmental Claim Validation after verifying the bio-based content of a product.

Being recognized by these two global testing organizations demonstrates that LG Display prioritizes eco-friendly elements throughout every stage of the product life cycle. It also reflects the company’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and leading the charge in the growing market for eco-friendly products, especially as more consumers demand planet-friendly solutions.

The Green Secrets Behind the High-End Laptop Panels: Low Power Tech and Biomass

LG Display’s laptop panels using biomass as part of their material

How did LG Display’s laptop panels earn these eco-friendly recognitions? The secret lies in the design and production stages of the product, where recycled and biomass-based components are used, as well as the introduction of technologies that enhance power efficiency during use!

The laptop panels contain materials derived from natural products of sugarcane after sugar production. Biomass materials, which utilize waste plants, are a leading eco-friendly solution as they help reduce carbon emissions. By replacing traditional plastic components with biodegradable biomass plastic, LG Display was able to obtain the bio-based Environmental Claim Validation.

In addition, LG Display focused on reducing power consumption in laptop panels by applying components with high power efficiency through nanometer-level ultra-precision micro-processing and integrating low-power algorithms. These efforts resulted in an approximately 8% reduction in carbon emissions across the entire product life cycle compared to the previous model, being certified the prestigious Product Carbon Reduction.

Leading the Way in Product Responsibility Using LCA

LG Display’s Product Life Cycle Assessment Methodology

LG Display’s commitment to product responsibility doesn’t stop with its high-end 14-inch laptop panels. The company has also put its eco-friendly philosophy into action with its automotive OLEDs and OLED TV panels. In January, its automotive OLEDs were certified Product Carbon Footprint by TÜV Rheinland, and in 2022, its OLED TV panel was the first in the industry to receive this certification by The Carbon Trust, a global leader in eco-certification.

These achievements wouldn’t have been possible without LG Display’s early adoption of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in 2021. The LCA allows for a comprehensive evaluation of all environmental impacts across the product life cycle. Thanks to LCA, LG Display has been able to reduce material and component usage, cut down greenhouse gas emissions and power consumption during production, develop low-power products, and minimize waste –all contributing to a greener future.

Stay tuned as LG Display continues to lead the way with innovative technology and eco-friendly products, shaping a more sustainable future!
