“Sleep” has become an essential word for modern people! Since it plays such a vital role in balancing our circadian rhythms, getting enough sleep is a priority for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, as more of us experience sleep disorders due to factors like exposure to blue light, there is rising interest in ways to improve sleep hygiene. Here to the rescue is a display that promotes a good night’s sleep because it emits the industry’s lowest level of blue light!
A lot of screentime? Concerned about sleep health? No problem!
LG Display’s entire lineup of OLED TV and monitor panel models, from 27 to 97 inches, recently became the world’s first displays to obtain Eyesafe Circadian Certification. This recognition from U.S. eye safety certification agency Eyesafe demonstrated once again how “human friendly” LG Display’s OLED panels are.
Our circadian rhythms refer to biological patterns that repeat approximately every 24 hours. The human body maintains these rhythms partly by secreting melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone. But melatonin secretion is affected by blue light from screens – watching TVs or smartphones at night, for example, can negatively impact circadian rhythms and cause sleep disorders.
Eyesafe has developed the Circadian Protection Factor (CPF) evaluation by assessing the proportion of blue light emitted by a screen and its impact on melatonin secretion. LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels achieved the highest circadian certification rating (CPF 50) as they emit just 36% blue light, which is the lowest in the industry.
But what about picture quality, you might ask? After all, if blue light is excessively reduced, it can lead to color distortion. However, the self-emissive structure of LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels, in which the pixels light up on their own without any need for a backlight, maintains excellent color reproduction while reducing blue light.
According to the Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board, a world-renowned group of ophthalmologists and optometrists, “LG Display’s OLED panels reduce blue light emissions, making them comfortable for the eyes even when watching for long periods of time and keeping viewers healthy.” So meaningful is their endorsement that these panels are recommended to “help maintain circadian rhythms.”
LG Display’s OLED TV panels help with regular sleep patterns!
In July, LG Display and a Kookmin University research team conducted a joint clinical study to verify the effect of TV panels on sleep. They measured subjects’ melatonin secretion after watching the same content in the same viewing environment on either OLED or mini LED TVs. After watching TV in the evening, the mini LED group’s average melatonin secretion fell 2.7%, while that of their OLED counterparts rose 8.1%. By allowing melatonin secretion to increase, and with half the proportion of blue light emissions as mini LED TVs, OLED panels were shown to be helpful in promoting normal sleep.
Unlike LCD panels, which generally emit 70-80% blue light because of their continuous reliance on a strong backlight, LG Display’s OLED TV panels have a self-emissive structure in which each pixel emits light on its own without any need for a backlight. This enables them to emit just 36% blue light – not only is this half that of LCDs, it is the lowest level among existing TV panels.
LG Display cares about the health of viewers as well as picture quality
As well as being able to celebrate reduced blue light, LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels feature a range of health advantages. For example, they have also UL Solutions’ Flicker Free and Intertek’s Reflection Free certifications.
LG Display is serious about viewers’ health while being committed to providing the best realistic picture quality – and the company will continue to strive to unveil human-friendly OLED products through innovative technologies.
