Imagine a world where you can effortlessly check the day’s news on your clothes and change the color of your bag to match the weather. This isn’t just science fiction or fantasy anymore! LG Display’s stretchable displays are breaking down the barriers between technology and fashion, showcasing the potential of future fashion items.
This potential was on full display at 2025 S/S Seoul Fashion Week, a top-tier fashion event in South Korea. From September 3rd to 7th, at the DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza), LG Display collaborated with renowned designers Youn-hee Park and Chung-chung Lee to launch an era of wearable technology. Their dazzling designs, featuring stretchable displays in both clothing and accessories, stole the show and received rave reviews from audiences and industry professionals alike. Here’s a glimpse of these revolutionary fashion pieces!
Stretchable Displays? Stretch, Fold, and Twist with Ease!
So, what exactly is a stretchable display? As the name suggests, a stretchable display can be freely stretched, folded, and twisted, making it a prime example of a free-form display.
In 2022, LG Display successfully developed the world’s first stretchable display that can expand from 12 inches to 14 inches. By stretching the display, users can gain an additional 2 inches of screen space while still enjoying high resolution and vivid full-color reproduction typical of standard monitors. This display is not only highly flexible but also boasts excellent image quality. Its thin and lightweight design allows it to adhere seamlessly to diverse surfaces like skin, clothing, or even furniture.
This unprecedented design initiative is part of a national project led by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy with the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology to test the commercial potential of Stretchable displays.
Designer Youn-hee Park: Transform Your Look to Match Your Vibe
Now, let’s dive into 2025 S/S Seoul Fashion Week. Designer Youn-hee Park dazzled the runway by integrating stretchable displays into her clothing, themed around Love, Peace, and Freedom. Her designs featured vivid patterns and uplifting messages.
The stretchable displays on the garments showcased vibrant patterns that changed with a simple touch, revealing powerful slogans. This incredible versatility allows wearers to effortlessly switch up their style according to the weather or their mood.
Youn-hee Park commented, “Imagine being able to change the design and color of the clothes you wear based on your situation or environment—this would bring a new paradigm to the fashion industry!”, expressing optimism about the impact of stretchable displays on everyday fashion and the industry.
Designer Chung-chung Lee: Evolving Stretchable Displays into Fashion Materials
On the other side of the spectrum, designer Chung-chung Lee brought a futuristic and mystical vibe with wearable devices attached to the face and garments enhanced by stretchable displays. When models touched areas of their outfits that initially appeared to be plain skin, various fabrics were revealed through the stretchable displays. Isn’t the ability to customize fabrics with these displays truly remarkable?
Chung-chung Lee highlighted the game-changing potential of stretchable displays to revolutionize fashion: “Stretchable displays could completely change the paradigm of clothing patterns and create endlessly innovative garments,” anticipating a major leap forward in design if stretchable displays become integrated into fashion.
This exciting collaboration broadens the scope of stretchable displays into fashion, introducing a whole new realm of customer value by enabling displays to be worn like clothes or as body attachments. Stay tuned for the evolution of stretchable displays as they lead the way in innovative fashion!
