When choosing a TV or monitor, what criteria matter most to you? While clear picture quality, vibrant color expression, and wide viewing angles are essential, ‘eye health’ has become an increasingly important factor. As screens are used for extended periods, it’s crucial to consider their impact on eye health. LG Display has consistently focused on developing technology that prioritizes eye protection, and as a result, has achieved the industry’s first ‘UL Solution Eyesafe 3.0’ verification for all OLED panel products.
As technology advances, the standards for objectively verifying and evaluating that technology become increasingly stringent. Through the acquisition of the UL Solution Eyesafe 3.0 verification, LG Display has taken another leap forward, once again raising the bar for eye-friendly display technology. Let’s take a closer look at the new customer value delivered by LG Display OLED!
From Eye Health to Circadian Rhythm Protection!
The UL Solution Eyesafe 3.0 verification is a verification system developed by ‘Eyesafe’, an international authority in blue light management, and conducted by ‘UL Solutions’, leading eye care professionals, and verified by a global leader in applied safety science. This achievement goes beyond simply protecting eye health, as it marks the completion of display technology that also safeguards the body’s circadian rhythm.
Unlike the previous Eyesafe® certification, which focused solely on the proportion of blue light, ‘Radiance Protection Factor (RPF®)’, ‘Eyesafe 3.0’ adds the ‘Circadian Protection Factor (CPF)’, which measures the impact on melatonin secretion and the circadian rhythm. This introduces a more comprehensive standard for human-friendly displays, providing users with differentiated customer value and a superior viewing experience.
To obtain this certification, the display’s color gamut must meet a DCI-P3 standard of at least 90%. Additionally, both the (CPF) —quantifying the impact of blue light on the body’s rhythm— and the RPF —indicating the proportion of blue light emitted— must each meet or exceed 35. In other words, the display must maintain optimal image quality while protecting the circadian rhythm and minimizing blue light exposure.
*A higher CPF number indicates less impact of blue light on the circadian rhythm, while a higher RPF number indicates lower emission of blue light.
According to verification results, all OLED TV and monitor panels mass-produced by LG Display recorded a CPF of 60 and an RPF of 40, significantly minimizing the impact on the human body. This level is comparable to blue light blocking films attached to monitors and smartphones, creating a healthier viewing environment without the need for additional protective devices. With this certification, LG Display OLED has evolved into a more human-friendly display, delivering enhanced customer value and a new level of viewing experience.
Comfortable Eyes, Deeper Sleep!
Experience Healthier Nights with LG Display OLED
In July last year, LG Display conducted a clinical trial in collaboration with Kookmin University to study the impact of OLED on eye health and sleep. The results showed that the group watching LCD TVs in the evening experienced a 2.7% decrease in melatonin secretion, while the group watching OLED TVs saw an 8.1% increase.
This means that LG Display’s OLED does not interfere with melatonin production, helping to maintain healthier sleep patterns. By minimizing eye strain and considering circadian rhythms, LG Display OLED delivers a differentiated customer value as a human-friendly display.
In addition, LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels reduce harmful blue light and eliminate flickering, earning certifications such as Flicker Free and Reflection Free from leading global certification organizations. This helps reduce eye fatigue that can occur during prolonged screen viewing, providing a more comfortable viewing experience.
One common concern with excessively reducing blue light is the potential distortion of color expression. However, since each pixel in LG Display’s OLED panels emits its own light, they maintain excellent color reproduction while effectively lowering the proportion of blue light.
For a Better Display Experience!
Human-Centered Technology Innovation Continues
Through this objective and credible certification, customers can now find a new direction in choosing healthier displays. LG Display’s OLED, which meets the Eyesafe® 3.0 standards, has evolved further with technology that considers both eye health and circadian rhythm.
Going forward, LG Display will continue to research and innovate human-friendly displays to ensure that more people can enjoy a more comfortable and healthier viewing experience!
