What makes LG Display’s OLED so sleep-friendly?

Most of us will have experienced difficulty falling asleep after watching TV at night. This can often be caused by blue light emitted from TV screens, which interferes with the normal production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, as well as being responsible for eye fatigue. Against this backdrop, LG Display’s OLED TV panels, which help support healthy sleep patterns and eye health, have once again proven their viewer-friendliness.

LG Display OLED TV panels promote sleep – clinical study unveiled

Kookmin University researchers analyze melatonin secretion differences between OLED and LCD TV viewers

The gradual secretion of melatonin in the evening is important because it prepares us for sleep – and while we slumber, it plays a role in healing our entire bodies by helping organ recovery and regeneration.

Experiments are carried out to measure melatonin secretion levels

LG Display, together with researchers from Seoul’s Kookmin University, conducted a clinical study to verify the effects of TV panels on 40 adult male and female viewers’ sleep rhythms. Their melatonin secretion levels were measured as they were divided into two groups watching the same content in the same environment on either OLED or LCD TVs for two hours per night over two weeks.

Measurement of melatonin secretion in LCD and OLED TVs

The study demonstrated that the LCD group’s levels of melatonin secretion fell 2.7% compared with before they started watching TV. In the OLED group, however, melatonin secretion levels increased 8.1%.

Unlike LCD panels, which generally emit 70-80% blue light because of their continuous reliance on a strong backlight, LG Display’s OLED TV panels have a self-emissive structure in which each pixel emits light on its own without any need for a backlight. This enables them to emit just 36% blue light – not only is this half that of LCDs, it is the lowest level among existing TV panels.

In addition to minimizing negative effects of screen time on melatonin secretion, OLED TV panels were shown to be all the more supportive for healthy sleep by further activating viewers’ parasympathetic nerves, which are responsible for feelings of comfort.

The choice for a better daily life, LG Display’s OLED!

LG Display OLED panels were the world’s first to obtain TÜV Rheinland’s ‘Circadian Friendly’ certification (June 2023)

Even before this latest study, LG Display’s OLED panels had been recognized as supportive of body and eye health by various renowned global organizations. Last year, they were the first in the industry to receive the ‘Circadian Friendly’ certification from TÜV Rheinland, a leading global independent testing, inspection and certification body. LG Display’s OLED TV and monitor panels were found to provide excellent picture quality while minimizing any impact on the body’s biological 24-hour clock, receiving the highest level among circadian rhythm certifications – ‘Circadian Friendly Level (CFL) 1’.

With the industry’s lowest level of blue light emissions and absence of screen flicker, which can damage eyesight, LG Display’s OLED panels were also given the “EyeSafe” certification jointly developed by a U.S. eye safety organization Eyesafe Inc. and TÜV Rheinland. Moreover, they earned “Flicker Free Display (OLED)” and “Discomfort Glare Free” verifications from UL, a leading global safety science company.
