SEOUL, Korea (May 08, 2023) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that Dr. Hyun-Chul Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of the Small Display Business Group at LG Display, received the 2023 SID Fellow Award for his outstanding scientific contributions that have helped advance the display field.
Every year, the Society for Information Display (SID) selects new Fellows based on a thorough evaluation conducted by the committee and recommendations from previous Fellows, from the top 0.1% of SID members who were nominated for spearheading various exceptional research achievements.
According to the SID, Dr. Choi played a pivotal “leadership role in the development of highly efficient, long-life OLED displays with a novel tandem structure which led to the success of its OLED TV and automotive displays, and the commercialization of IPS technology for TV and high-performance IT products.”
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Choi has overseen the development of new products and base technologies, paving the way to drastically increase the lifespan of OLED with the development of the Tandem OLED structure, which stacks two organic light-emitting layers to significantly improve panel brightness, and a new display technology that converts hydrogen in organic light elements into powerful and stable deuterium.
Through these achievements, Dr. Choi was the driving force behind the expansion of OLED from the TV and smartphone sectors to new sectors such as IT and automotive.
Prior to these achievements, the awardee developed LG Display’s high-end LCD technology IPS (In-Plane Switching), which significantly enhanced the viewing angles of LCDs and ultimately contributed to the commercialization of high-performance TVs and IT LCD panels.
