LG Display Creates Differentiated Customer Value Through
“Sameness” Innovation

LG Display is accelerating its manufacturing innovation initiative “Sameness” to ensure consistent quality and productivity across its global production lines. By minimizing variations between equipment and processes, the company aims to secure stable, trusted quality for customers and deliver differentiated value.

Why “Sameness”? Building Customer Trust through Standardized Equipment Performance

The value LG Display pursues through its Sameness initiative is delivering consistent, best-in-class quality through elevated and standardized equipment performance.
Even when the same product is manufactured using identical equipment, differences in factory location, environmental conditions, or slight variations in equipment performance can naturally result in measurement gaps. Nevertheless, LG Display is committed to raising and standardizing all equipment performance so that every machine can produce high-level results.

Seongjae Jang and KyoungHo Kim of the Equipment Sameness Task explained Sameness by comparing it to a coffee franchise. They noted, “Just as the taste of coffee can vary depending on the type of machine or the person making it—even within the same franchise—display manufacturing is no different.” They added that through the Sameness initiative, LG Display will continue to uphold customer trust.

Establishing a 5-Step Sameness Framework… and Advancing Toward Full Data Systemization

As LG Display’s main product lineup has shifted from LCD to OLED, the need for manufacturing innovation has grown even stronger. OLED production involves more complex and challenging processes compared to LCD, making it more difficult to maintain consistent quality. This is why Sameness activities have become essential—to refine subtle differences between equipment and achieve uniform, best-in-class quality across all lines.

To provide employees with a clear and unified guideline, the department overseeing Sameness established the “Sameness Framework.” The entire journey from equipment design to mass production was divided into five stages, and key checkpoints required at each stage were systematically organized.

Work efficiency has also been improved through systemization. In the past, engineers had to manually check each tool to identify performance differences. Now, with the Sameness System, all data can be viewed and compared in a single interface, significantly enhancing efficiency. Beyond digital transformation (DX) for improved workflows, Sameness activities are now advancing toward AI transformation (AX) to automate work processes entirely.

[Mini Interview] Sameness, Spreading a New Way of Working

LG Display’s Sameness was introduced first implemented at select plants, contributing to timely production of new models and yield improvements. Going forward, it is expected to be expanded across the entire company. Without settling for the present, LG Display plans to continue creating differentiated customer value through Sameness, by identifying areas for improvement from new perspectives and generating results.
