[Mobility Inside] World-Leading Innovative Technology: The Role of the 57-inch P2P Display in Today’s Mobility Landscape

In this edition of Mobility Inside, we had the opportunity to chat with LG Display’s Young-jin Song and Kyung-mo Yoo from the Auto Advanced Development Team and Hyun-woo Park from the Auto Advanced Product Planning Team regarding the development of the world’s largest ’57-inch Pillar-to-Pillar (P2P) Display’ for automobiles, which garnered the Innovation Award at CES 2024, and how this solution aligns with the recent shift in automotive trends  towards SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles).

57-inch, the optimal size to offer differentiated driving experience

The world’s largest ’57-inch P2P display’ was recognized with the CES 2024 Innovation Award

First unveiled at CES 2024, the groundbreaking ’57-inch P2P display’ set new standards for automotive display technology. ‘P2P (Pillar-to-Pillar)’ entails a large screen that spans across the entire space between the left and right A-pillars of a vehicle. This innovative solution came into the spotlight not only for providing immersive content to passengers but also for its role as a key component in smart cockpits that provide a wide range of information for the era of autonomous driving.

This latest solution represents the industry’s first automotive display that exceeds 50 inches in size and is significant in terms of its optimization towards the trend of ‘screenification,’ where the size and number of automotive displays are increasing to enable drivers and passengers to control a multitude of functions. All-in-all, the 57-inch P2P display offers differentiated customer values by simultaneously providing various driving information, navigation controls, and entertainment features on a single screen that covers the entire dashboard.

LG Display’s technological prowess behind the 57-inch P2P display

When taking a closer look at the 57-inch P2P display, many may wonder about the advantages of using a large singular screen over integrating several smaller panels to achieve the same size. The method of integrating smaller panels leaves visible gaps that can compromise the seamless experience for passengers, which results in a loss of user immersion.

This is why LG Display opted to implement a high resolution on a massive, singular panel. Completing this feat not only required advanced technological expertise but also careful consideration towards reliability, this product was applied one of the strictest reliability tests compared to previous automotive display panels. By overcoming these obstacles, we were able to develop the industry-leading 57-inch P2P Display.

The 57-inch P2P display, the fruit of a monumental challenge

The developmental process of the 57-inch P2P display was anything but easy; there was no clear standard on what size the display should be. Our team had to meticulously measure the display widths of sedans from various automakers in order to surmise the average size, which was around 150cm, ultimately leading to the 57-inch(144.78cm) display.

Furthermore, transitioning the materials used for manufacturing TVs to produce automotive displays presented its own set of challenges. However, through collaboration across our internal departments, we were able to address issues related to material development, quality control, and obstacles occurred during establishment of production facilities. This concerted effort and teamwork allowed us to meet customer needs and generate ‘differentiated customer value’ by delivering displays tailored to various requirements.

Four key pillars of the 57-inch P2P display

The 57-inch P2P display stands out for its remarkable advantages and unique features, meticulously crafted to offer an exceptional experience. Let’s break down its strengths into four key points:

First, its ultra-large screen that accommodates everything. It provides a vast display that can be utilized simultaneously by both drivers and passengers, eliminating the inconvenience caused by the size restrictions of conventional displays and enhancing the overall ease and comfort of any journey.

Second, its immersive curved design. With a natural curvature of 3,500R, this display enables users to grasp driving information at a glance from any angle and watch content with vivid realism.

Third, its smooth and precise touch functionality. Equipped with LG Display’s proprietary In-Cell Touch technology featuring high-sensitivity, users can execute desired functions accurately with a single light touch.

And lastly, its reliability and durability even in extreme conditions. It is designed to operate flawlessly in extreme environments ranging from minus 40 degrees Celsius to a scorching 85 degrees Celsius, ensuring the essential reliability and durability required for automotive displays.

Embodying LG Display’s prowess in automotive display technology, the 57-inch P2P display and its remarkable technological capabilities have earned the company the CES 2024 Innovation Award from the Consumer Technology Association.
