Another year is in the books, and LG Display has marked yet another year of technological innovations and groundbreaking achievements. From advancements in OLED and other new form factor displays, strategic collaborations with key industry players, and various global certifications on eco-friendliness and eye health, here are some of the key highlights that defined LG Display’s journey throughout 2023.
The evolution of LG Display’s cutting-edge technologies
#1 – Decade of OLED advancements give birth to ‘META Technology’
At CES 2023, LG Display unveiled to the public for the first time its third-generation OLED TV panel ‘META Technology’ that transcends the second-generation EX Technology. META Technology comprises of new features such as ‘Micro Lens Array’ that maximizes light emission from the OLED panel and ‘META Booster,’ a brightness-enhancing algorithm that automatically analyzes and adjusts the brightness levels of each scene in real time.
All in all, OLED TVs equipped with META Technology emit light on a superior level by improving viewing angle by more than 30% and brightness by 60% over conventional OLED displays, and also boast improved energy efficiency.
Over the past decade, LG Display has significantly advanced its OLED technology to lead the premium TV market in the shift from LCD to OLED. By successfully mass-producing the world’s first 55-inch Full HD OLED TV panel in 2013, LG Display has become a pioneer in the OLED TV market. Today, LG Display boasts a full lineup of OLED TV panels ranging from 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, 88, and up to 97 inches!
#2 – The 45-inch ‘Bendable OLED Gaming Display’
Also during CES 2023, LG Display showcased its 45-inch ultra-wide gaming OLED display that can bend up to 800R, or a curvature radius of 800mm, revolutionizing how gamers can set up their gaming environment for the utmost immersion in their gameplay. Depending on the genre of game, which has its own optimal curvature (for example, curved monitors are best for racing games while flat monitors are best optimized for sports games), the Bendable OLED display allows players to utilize a curved and flat monitor all in one display.
This display also boasts the fastest response time of 0.03ms and is the first OLED display for monitors with a 240Hz refresh rate for some serious gaming firepower with smooth transitions during fast-paced action.
#3 – ‘Foldable OLEDs’ that expand functionality of IT devices
LG Display also began mass production of the 17-inch Foldable OLED panel for laptops, symbolizing one of many steps the company is taking to expand its OLED mastery onto IT devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. Utilizing LG Display’s unique Tandem OLED structure that delivers brighter screens with a longer lifespan, the 17-inch Foldable OLED for laptops integrates a specialized material that minimizes creasing in the folding area of the screen for a seamless look in clear QHD resolution quality.
In addition, the 17-inch Foldable OLED features an ‘in-folding’ design, allowing it to fold inwards with ease, resulting in a slim and seamless screen design that closely fits together when folded in half. This is also featured in another Foldable OLED from LG Display, the 8.03-inch 360-degree Foldable OLED. Ideal for mobile devices, this tech allows the panel to fold both inwards and outwards for a unique bi-directional folding, while its panel is equipped with a folding structure that can withstand over 200,000 folds under room temperature without any signs of crease.
#4 – The ultimate form factor ‘Stretchable’ Display receives SID acclaim
After first unveiling the industry’s first Stretchable display back in November 2022, the research paper into this next-generation display technology was selected as one of the Distinguished Papers by the Society for Information Display (SID).
LG Display’s Stretchable display is the world’s first 12-inch display that can be stretched by up to 20 percent, up to 14 inches, while delivering full-color RGB and a high resolution of 100ppi. This award-winning research has garnered recognition for significantly enhancing the resolution, flexibility, and reliability of stretchable displays, achieving substantial progress towards commercialization.
#5 – A breakthrough in OLED production with the self-development of p-Dopant
After approximately 10 years of collaborative R&D efforts with LG Chem, LG Display was finally able to succeed in self-developing the revolutionary ‘p-Dopant’ material, a core component in OLED production. Widely regarded as the most challenging material to develop in terms of technical complexity, p-Dopant is crucial in enhancing the OLED panel’s brightness efficiency as well as its overall lifespan. LG Display will incorporate its self-developed p-Dopant into its large-sized and small- and mid-sized OLED panels, with a systematic expansion plan regarding its wider application.
