LG Display’s OLED Panels Obtain the Industry’s First ‘Perfect Black’ Verification from UL Solutions

SEOUL, Korea (Oct. 19, 2022) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that its OLED panels have been recognized as the only existing TV and monitor panels to achieve perfect black levels in any environment.

LG Display recently received the ‘Perfect Black’ verification for all OLED panel models ranging from 42 to 97 inches from the world-renowned safety science leader, UL Solutions.

Most displays are affected by external light when expressing colors, including black. Consequently, the ability to express accurate black levels regardless of external illumination results in higher color expression and sharper images.

UL Solutions evaluated black levels of various displays in a brightly illuminated environment of 500 lux. This is similar to the brightness of a living room in broad daylight. Through this assessment process, LG Display’s OLED panels were shown to deliver black levels of 0.15 nit. By achieving a black level that is around 40% lower than standard ‘Perfect Black’ criteria of 0.24 nit, LG Display’s OLED was able to become the first existing panel to receive the ‘Perfect Black’ verification.

Thanks to self-emissive pixels that can be controlled individually, LG Display’s OLED panels minimize light leakage and external light reflections by turning off pixels to achieve the perfect black and infinite contrast, delivering a true image without distortion or exaggeration.

LG Display’s OLED panels have long been known for its ability to accurately express true images in terms of brightness, chroma, and color chromaticity, having received the ‘100% Color Fidelity’ verification from Intertek, a leading global product testing, and certification company, prior to the recent ‘Perfect Black’ verification.

“Through UL Solutions’ objective and science-based assessment, LG Display’s OLED has been proven to be the first panel to deliver perfect black levels,” said Jin Min-kyu, Head of Life Display Promotion Division at LG Display. “Utilizing the recent verification from UL Solutions, we will continue to actively promote the excellent image quality of OLED.”
