Transparent OLED and NFT collection accelerating the digital art revolution

Can NFTs record space travel? If so, what would be the best way to appreciate such art? These questions have been answered by LG Display in collaboration with renowned media artist Refik Anadol, whose NFT collection, ‘An Important Memory for Humanity,’ records the first all-civilian spaceflight.

Turning historical moment into artwork

Four civilians who were on board the Inspiration4 when it successfully explored the Earth’s orbit at an altitude of 575 km (357 mi) last September. And LG Display once again teamed up with Refik Anadol to turn that historical moment into artwork.

Previously, Anadol has made use of OLED’s artistic scope. At his MACHINE HALLUCINATIONS: NATURE DREAMS exhibition held at the Konig Gallery in Berlin last November, he stunned onlookers with his highly intricate art displayed on LG Display’s OLED panels. Originally from Istanbul, Anadol has been actively engaged in creative projects in Los Angeles, using artificial intelligence to embed his work with profound meaning.

‘An Important Memory for Humanity’ was created using data related to the effects of space travel. Anadol used artificial intelligence to analyze and reinterpret various kinds of data, including health information, audio and video. The resulting visualization is a mesmerizing collection that comes alive on a Transparent OLED display. Various colors, lines and spots are scattered and gathered to create a vivid three-dimensional impression.

The dazzling portrayal of this one-of-a-kind collection is possible because LG Display’s Transparent OLEDs project digital art in a unique way that creates the sense of a holographic, floating image. Boasting 40% transparency, this technology also still offers OLED’s self-emissive pixels with the accuracy and detailed image quality they produce.

There are numerous examples showing Transparent OLED’s potential to be used in the artistic field. Last July, world-famous jewelry brand BVLGARI introduced dazzling digital art in cooperation with LG Display by harnessing Transparent OLED to portray the original color and vibrancy of gemstones. In addition to that, Transparent OLED was used at the FUTURES exhibition at the iconic Smithsonian in the U.S.

With LG Display providing perfect ways to demonstrate digital art, the company is planning to further cooperate with artists with its Transparent OLED displays to support their digital art at major exhibitions throughout the world this year, including in North America and Europe.
