LG Display Showcases Ultra HD Advances at CES 2014

LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, will showcase the latest advancements in display technology resolution and design during CES 2014. The company will unveil an expanded lineup of Ultra High-Definition TV displays, which includes seven new models with 3240×2160 resolution.

A key highlight will be a 105-inch curved Ultra HD LCD TV panel, which is the world’s largest curved LCD panel and has 5120×2160 resolution – five times that of a Full HD panel. With its 11 million-pixel resolution and a 21:9 widescreen viewing with a 6,000R curvature, this pioneering screen offers the ultimate in cinema-like viewing and picture quality experience.

It is notable that LG Display has successfully developed such a large size curved LCD TV panel with Ultra HD feature without affecting the viewing angle and by improving the TFT circuit and optical instrument design. It is much more difficult to apply curves to LCDs than OLEDs, as LCDs need a backlight unit, which complicates curvatures. Also, an LCD display over 100 inches and capable of providing Ultra HD picture resolution or better requires the light generated by LEDs to be spread evenly over all parts of the display without any illumination leakage. For these reasons, this 105-inch panel marks a significant technological advancement in the display industry. Until now, the largest curved display panels have been 65-inch LCD and 77-inch OLED panels.

Expanding its Ultra HD lineup, LG Display has added 79-inch and 98-inch models to its premium segment and more affordable 42-inch and 49-inch panels, offering energy-efficient and environment-friendly advances along with ergonomically curved design features.

With 55-inch and 77-inch curved OLED TV panels on exhibit, LG Display is set to showcase its world-leading OLED and Ultra HD technologies. This will include an unprecedented range of Ultra HD screens offering 8 million pixel resolution – four times higher than the existing Full HD resolution. In addition, FPR 3D technology is embedded in all Ultra HD products, creating an immersive 3D viewing experience.

LG Display will also show its advancements in IT and mobile display technology with diverse offerings based on its Advanced High Performance-IPS (AH-IPS) technology. In addition to the introduction of a 23.8-inch 185 pixels per inch (ppi) Ultra HD and 13.3-inch 220 ppi Quad High-Definition monitor panels, the company will unveil an outstanding 31-inch professional monitor panel for graphic design and CT imaging use, featuring an unrivaled 4096×2160 resolution.

On the mobile front, LG Display will present a 6-inch 491 ppi Quad HD smartphone display panel that offers four times the resolution of HD. The company intends to further promote its touch-panel solutions offered in its smartphone displays with in-cell technology as well as in GFF, OGS, GF2-type touch panels for IT applications.

LG Display has been at the forefront of developing new display technologies and it is showcasing the next-generation displays to highlight this strength. The company will showcase a 47-inch transparent display with 15 percent enhanced transparency; a glasses-free 55-inch 3D display offering more natural 3D viewing; and a video wall composed of nine 55-inch panels with a 3.6mm bezel-to-bezel width – the world’s slimmest – to produce seamless viewing.

“LG Display has been proactively coming up with differentiated specialty products and is committed to constantly providing these products ahead of customer demand,” Dr. Sang-Beom Han, President and CEO of LG Display, said. “At CES 2014, we will show how we achieve this goal with our cutting-edge technologies and bring the best to our customers to further strengthen our partnership with them.”
